The Pine Tar Incident involving George Brett is one of the most famous and dramatic moments in baseball history.
1983, during a game between the Kansas City Royals and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium:
In the top of the 9th inning, the Royals were down 4–3. George Brett hit a go-ahead 2-run home run off Yankees closer Goose Gossage. The Royals took a 5–4 lead—seemingly winning the game.
After the home run, Yankees manager Billy Martin asked the umpires to inspect Brett’s bat.
They found too much pine tar on the bat—extending more than 18 inches up the handle, which violated MLB rules at the time.
The umpires ruled Brett out, nullifying the home run and ending the game in a Yankees win.
Brett exploded out of the dugout in a rage, charging toward the umpires.
His furious reaction—arms flailing, eyes wild—became one of the most replayed moments in sports history.
